"Master Zhixiang began to rescue stray animals in 1993, and currently has over 10,000 dogs and more than 200 cats. The cats are housed in the Bao'en Temple and the dogs are in the Pudong base. Shanghai Fengxian District Qingcun Town Baoen Stray Animal Protection Club founded by Master Zhixiang, rented a total area of more than 11,000 square meters in Pudong , which has six greenhouses for stray dogs, and others as workers’ dormitories.

Roots & Shoots unites those who hold certain values in common: love for animals, care for the community, and devotion to protecting the environment. Shanghai Roots & Shoots was founded as a volunteer organization in November 1999. Five years later, in November 2004, Shanghai Roots & Shoots was granted a Non-Profit Organization status by the Shanghai Municipality Government.
