Meet the winners of our More Than A Market Awards 2021!
In the Awards Category “Education” Covestro China received an award for their project “Covestro MagicMaterial School.” The award was presented by Pit Heltmann, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Shanghai. Covestro China leveraged its technology and material expertise to create a Covestro science classroom in the Zhelin School, a local elementary and high school located in the Fengxian district, Shanghai for children of migrant workers ranging from six to sixteen years old. So far, the “MagicMaterial School” has reached 6,000 students and 10,000 people. | |
In the Awards Category “Environmental Protection” Trolli Guangzhou Confectionery Co., Ltd. was honored for their “Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) Upgrading Project.” The award was presented by Callen Fang, Deputy CEO of Legal Center for NGO. Trolli Guangzhou Confectionery has worked closely with its partner vendors to upgrade wastewater treatment processes and enhance the processing capacity by installing new, high-efficiency equipment. As a result, the company has increased its capacity of wastewater treatment from 2.25 tons COD per day to 9.5 tons COD per day and is exploring new energy-saving solutions to achieve the ultimate goal: zero waste. | |
In the Awards Category “Diversity & Inclusion” Bosch Automotive Products (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. was awarded for their outstanding efforts in the company’s project “Hand in Hand-Caring Children with Autism.” The award was presented by Oliver Ye Yang, Trustee at Shanghai Soong Ching Ling Foundation. Bosch Automotive Products partnered with Sunflower; an organization dedicated to supporting children with autism. Bosch supports Sunflower by providing financial assistance, organizational skills and, training opportunities for the organization’s teachers. In the past four years, Bosch Suzhou has successfully held 235 events, involving more than 1,000 volunteers and 839 direct beneficiaries. | |
In the Awards Category “Sustainable Supply Chains” the jury honored BRUGGER Magnetsysteme GmbH and its “Increasing Sustainability in Magnet Supply Chains” project. The award was presented by Richard Zhang, CEO at Kern-Liebers Taicang and Board Member of the German Chamber of Commerce in China | Shanghai. BRUGGER Magnetsysteme decided to focus on the risks associated with rare earths because it was concerned about the consequences of its sourcing activities in China. In 2014, it launched a project to increase sustainability in magnet supply chains. The project team carried out initial audits and a comprehensive upstream supply-chain study and organized training sessions in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). | |
In this year’s Special Category “Jury Selection” ALDI CHINA has been selected for its “Cooperation with Food Bank to Avoid Food Waste.” The award was presented by Rolf Koehler, Principal at Koehler & Co and the German Chamber’s Honary Member and one of the founders of the More than a Market initiative. ALDI CHINA officially launched a partnership with Green Food Bank to reduce food waste and give back to the community. The project first started in the company’s warehouse on Tmall, where ALDI CHINA sorted food items close to their expiry date and donated them to the food bank. Through Green Food Bank’s distribution network in Shanghai, these food items were distributed to families in need, closing the gap between food surplus and food shortage. |

In the category “Small Enterprises (1-500 employees in China)”, Wemhoener (Changzhou) Machinery Manufacturing Co., Ltd. received an award for their project “Wemhoener Charity Foundation” which promotes dialogue and exchanges among school students from the Changzhou Xinbei district and Herford, Germany, in the areas of culture, sports and education. | |
In the category “Large Enterprises (more than 5,000 employees)”, SAP Labs China was awarded for their outstanding efforts in the company’s “SAP SCHOOL 4 Autism at Work” project which aims to create more awareness on autism and opportunities for people affected. | |
The award of this year’s special category “Cooperation with Local Partners” was won by AICHELIN Heat Treatment Systems (Beijing) Cop., Ltd. for supporting the Little Swan School in Beijing, a school for left-behind children of migrant workers. |

In the category “Small Enterprises (1-500 employees in China)”, Taicang Inclusion Factory received an award that honors their partnership with Flex Zhuhai, in which both parties teamed up to develop a manufacturing unit (Mechanical Inclusive Factory) where all operators are people with intellectual disabilities. | |
In the category “Medium Enterprises (500-5,000 employees)”, E.G.O. Components was selected for their “Summer Camp” for left-behind children of migrant workers, which is dedicated to reuniting rural workers and their families who are otherwise separated due to the increase of high mobile labor force | |
In the category “Large Enterprises (more than 5,000 employees)”, Siemens China was awarded for their outstanding efforts in the company’s flagship project “I-Green Education Program” which aims to educate migrant children in the field of science and technology of environmental protection. | |
This year’s winner of the special category “Environmental Protection” is Henkel (China) Investment’s program “Flying Hope”, which aims to save the life of a bird species which is close to extinction due to land reclamation in East Asia and continuously adds new ideas and enriching partnerships to their efforts. | |
Due to this year’s high number of applications, ‘More Than a Market’ has awarded yet another organization for their outstanding performance in 2019: German School Shanghai-Hongqiao (DSS-Hongqiao) and its partner, the NGO Mifan Mama, have been selected as the winner of the category “Passion & Potential” for their “Project “‘Illumine+’ Eye Care Outreach” which is a comprehensive program for the benefit of poor children to provide measures for the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of visual impairments, including free checkups, information on how to avoid and treat problems, as well as the organization and financial support of treatment and surgery when needed. |

In the category “Small Enterprises (1-500 employees in China)”, Ningbo Silk Trend Garments was chosen for its “PMX Summer Kindergarten” project, where children of migrant workers are reunited during the summer months with their parents, while enjoying trainings and activities such as excursions, arts and sports provided by the company. | |
In the category “Medium Enterprises (500-5,000 employees)”, Festo China received the award for their exemplary engagement in training and equipping Chinese participants for taking part in the world’s largest international vocational skills contest, the “WorldSkill” competition. | |
In the category “Large Enterprises (more than 5,000 employees)”, BASF (China) received the award for their “BASF Kids Lab” project, which sparks young, inquisitive minds about natural sciences, especially chemistry, and helps children gain a practical understanding of science. | |
In the category for “Outstanding Supply Chain Management”, which were initiated by five or more German companies, METRO Jinjiang Cash & Carry was selected with their ‘Star Farm’ project – a food safety consulting firm, which supports farmers in developing and implementing more sustainable farming techniques and a greater control of food safety and quality. | |
Acknowledging the overwhelming number of German companies engaged in social inclusion, the category “Social Inclusion” was additionally introduced. Changsha Bach’s Bakery was awarded this prize for its “Bach’s Bakery Program”, by employing, training and giving people with hearing impairments the opportunity to learn baking skills and gain financial independence by being fully integrated into a normal work environment. |

In the category “Small Enterprises (1-500 employees in China)”, rose plastic (Kunshan) was chosen for its ongoing education program “SPARK THE FUTURE” for children in underprivileged areas. | |
In the category “Medium Enterprises (500-5,000 employees)”, Lanxess received the award for their exemplary engagement in their Water Protection Project aimed at increasing public awareness and capability of protecting water resources. | |
In the category “Large Enterprises (more than 5,000 employees)”, SAP Labs China received the award for their comprehensive approach to preparing young people for an innovation-driven economy with their SAP Labs China TREES Program. | |
In the category for “Collaborative Projects”, which are initiated by two or more German companies, the Football Project Team was selected. The objective of the project is to give migrant children the opportunity to enjoy football training and modern physical education, while having an integrative effect and promoting self-confidence, tolerance and teamwork. | |
Acknowledging the overwhelming number of German companies engaged in supporting schools and pupils, an additional fifth category “School Partnerships” was introduced. The companies Bosch Automotive Products (Suzhou), Freudenberg and Wacker Chemicals (China) were jointly awarded the prize for building schools, providing funds and supplies to students and training to teachers in mainly earthquake ridden areas. |

In the category “Small Enterprises (50-500 employees in China)”, Krones Machinery (Taicang) Co., Ltd. was chosen for its ongoing Apprentice Training Program. Krones has built an apprenticeship program that offers majors in the areas of mechatronics and cutting. The company aims to foster a tradition of vocational training in China as a way to guarantee the production of qualified work as well as to further increase employees’ loyalty to their company by empowering them and creating a culture of trust. | |
In the category “Medium Enterprises (500-10,000 employees)”, the exemplary engagement of Merck China for its School Water Project was recognized. This project started in 2012 with the goal of providing children in selected primary schools in Shanghai with safe drinking water and raising their awareness of environmental protection measures. | |
In the category “Large enterprises (more than 10,000 employees)”, Bayer (China) Ltd. received the award for its Bayer China Volunteer Association (BCVA). BCVA offers a platform that allows employees to initiate their own projects. The employees themselves can decide which issues they will focus on in Chinese society. Moreover, Bayer’s employees have the possibility to use their own expertise and skills to optimize the volunteering services. | |
In the category for “Collaborative Projects”, which applies to projects initiated by two or more German companies, Taicang Sino-German Handicapped Technology Co. Ltd. was selected. In the project Inclusion Factory Taicang more than 80 partners joined forces to establish a workshop, which is the first institution in China to give meaningful employment to mentally challenged individuals under real market conditions. |
