Company Name: TÜV Rheinland
Project Name: Carbon Neutral Certification
Award Category: Innovation Sustainable Service
Product / Service Introduction
Carbon Neutral Certification is one of the sustainability services launched by TÜV Rheinland several years ago. It applies to items such as products, organizations and events, as well as energy carrier like electricity and gas, for which the specific CO2 emission (carbon footprints) are either zero (e.g. electricity from renewable energy sources) or for which the CO2 emissions have been neutralized by verifiable compensation measures.
Explanation of Circular Economy Practice
On August 2, 2022, TÜV Rheinland issued a carbon-neutral certificate for Lenovo laptops (models: Yoga Air 14s IAP7, Yoga Slim 9 14IAP7, Lenovo Slim 9 14IAP7, including product
packaging). This is the world's first carbon-neutral certificate issued by TÜV Rheinland for notebook computer products, reflecting Lenovo's green development philosophy of adhering to transparent and efficient governance, reducing carbon emissions scientifically, and practicing good business.
The D-side (bottom side) of the Lenovo laptop that received TÜV Rheinland's carbon neutral certification is made of 50% recycled aluminum, the battery casing is made of 25% recycled plastic, and the outer packaging, through an innovative design, uses 70% less plastic compared to the previous generation.
As the flagship product of Lenovo‘s consumer laptops, it has been carrying leading innovative technologies in the application of laptops. TÜV Rheinland’s carbon neutral certification of this computer product leads consumers‘ green awareness and upholds the concept of energy saving and emission reduction. We are happy to share our technical experience in energy saving and carbon reduction with enterprises, helping them to reduce their carbon footprints at the organizational and operational levels and from the perspective of the entire life cycle of their products; through the introduction of the concept of eco-design, supporting complete the process from the design of the product to the final disposal of the product at the end of its life cycle; and through the optimization of management tools, supply chain control, and the use of new materials, continue to reduce the impact of the products on the environment.
Overview of Product/Service Lifecycle
Product Design:
The outer chassis is built using 6000-series aluminum, 50% recycled aluminum and has a comfort-edge design.
A 180-degree hinge aboard the laptop.
Production:
The battery casing is made of 25% recycled plastic
The outer chassis is using 50% reclyced aluminum
Useage:
Referring to the test results of Energy star, build a using assumption: off power 25%; sleeping power 35%; long idle power 10%;shore idle power 30%, and then make an estimation calculation in use stage.
Recycling and Recovery:
According to the results of WEEE, build related assumption of waste treatment to implement calculation.
