Environment

Climate Change:

DHL Group was the world's first logistics company to propose a net zero target for all logistics-related CO₂e emissions by 2050. In 2021, the Group released a new sustainability roadmap, planning to reduce the group’s annual CO₂e emissions from 39 million tons in 2021 to below 29 million tons by 2030. To this end, the group will invest 7 billion Euros in Sustainable Aviation Fuels, Bio-LNG in line-hauls, last-mile fleet electrification, Sustainable Marine Fuels and carbon neutral buildings.

 

DHL Group aims for a 60 percent share of e-fleet last mile by 2030. By 2022, DHL Express China had already electrified 23 percent of its last mile fleet.

 

DHL Express China put into operation a fleet of eight hydrogen-fueled trucks in May 2023, with a total monthly mileage of more than 20,000 kilometers, which is expected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 170 tons per year. DHL Global Forwarding introduced two new electric trucks and two electric tractors, with a total monthly mileage of more than 20,000 km, which is expected to reduce carbon emissions by more than 300 tons per year.


DHL China started to provide GoGreen Plus service from 2021, a service based on carbon insetting approach, where customers can voluntarily choose the amount of CO₂e emissions reduction and SAF usage. DHL can provide a transport & logistics environmental footprint report for customers with such needs.

Natural Resources and Energy:

In terms of infrastructure and vehicles, DHL Express China has achieved 100% use of green electricity.

 

DHL actively promotes paperless trade. In 2022, the paperless trade coverage rate of DHL Express in China exceeded 70%, saving more than 44 million sheets of paper, roughly equivalent to planting tens of thousands of trees.

 

DHL office and facilities use LED lights and other energy-saving electrical appliances, and the energy usage is monitored by the Real Estate department and suggestions for optimization are proposed. The company made clear rules for office supplies use and recycling. Solar panels are installed on the roof of facilities to utilize renewable energy.


Prevention of Pollution :

DHL Express China has made green packaging rules, which have clear regulations on the use and recycling of packaging.


Other Actions Taken for Environmental Protection:

DHL China enhances employees' awareness of environmental protection through internal training and activities, both online and offline.

  • Organized tree-planting activities for several consecutive years.

  • Made use of the World Environment Day, Earth Day and other occasions to strengthen employees’ environmental knowledge and implement GoGreen charitable projects.

  • In 2022, DHL Express China donated to the China Green Foundation for their 9,000+m2 wetland restoration project.

Social

HR Development and Engagement:

DHL has developed "Safety First Rules” that defines the objectives and common standards related to occupational health and safety. We have embedded occupational health and safety policies in our code of conduct to protect employees (including external ones), partners, and customers in their operations. By the end of 2022, 30 facilities in China have received the TAPA A certification.

 

To acknowledge the exceptional contributions made by employees during the pandemic, DHL Group awarded an additional bonus to all staff worldwide in 2020 and 2021. In September 2022, over 60 employees from DHL Express China received a 1,000 Euro UPStairs scholarship for their children. Since its launch in 2012, this program has garnered a cumulative investment of nearly a million RMB within mainland China. Meanwhile, DHL Global Forwarding has orchestrated a dynamic range of activities, including “Let’s Coffee” dialogues with executives, Family Day, annual Appreciation Week, and team-building excursions. These initiatives help bolster team cohesion and foster communication among employees.

 

At DHL Group, our employees can be sure to find learning resources tailored to their career development needs, no matter whether they are new hires or seasoned professionals. DHL China provides various online and offline learning programs, such as Certified International Specialist (CIS), Supervisory Excellence Academy, and Six Leadership Attributes. These programs not only offer specialized training but also help employees uncover their intrinsic leadership potential. At the same time, DHL Group designs a range of policies for internal cross-functional and cross-regional transfer. Moreover, our annual employee performance review helps individuals effectively manage their personal growth plans. DHL Group encourages all employees to transition from single-domain specialists to become versatile professionals.


Diversity,Equity and Inclusion :

DHL Group is steadfastly propelling a diverse work culture that empowers employees to explore numerous possibilities, navigate external changes, and unleash their full potential. At DHL Group, communication is a two-way avenue. Beyond the annual Employee Opinion Survey, we have also established a regular internal communication channel to ensure that employees’ feedback is addressed within three working days. It allows the quick implementation of employees’ viable suggestions in DHL’s workflow.

 

DHL also offers flexible work hours, equal pay, and competitive policy support for female employees.We have Women in Management career programs, such as DHL4HER (DHL Express) and Women at DGFF, to promote gender equality in the workplace.

      

Product Liability:

DHL has launched Customer Improvement Project, using a series of structured tools to improve service quality and user experience, and digitizing the project to make it easier to use.

 

DHL China specifically developed Mobile IPR training courses and Mobile Escalation Tools (WeChat) to train its internal teams. DHL China also set up the monthly DHL Security Guard Award to motivate employees who have reported colleagues suspected of significant IPR infringement cases.


Supply Chain:

DHL Group has an action plan for supplier selection, and three or more suppliers must bid for procurement. All suppliers must sign a code of conduct to regulate their behavior. The company gives priority to partners with ESG certification. For every node in the supply chain, a backup plan is required.


Community Engagement :

In 2017, DHL Express launched the DHL’s Got Heart (DGH) initiative globally to fully support employees’ engagement in charity. Over the past five years, the DGH program has donated millions of RMB, with over 100 projects in areas of voluntary blood donation, funding for school dropouts, caring for the elderly, wilderness relief and disaster relief, among other projects. In 2022, thanks to these persistent and impactful charitable initiatives, DHL Express China won the "Charity Communication Award". Meanwhile, DHL Global Forwarding continues to carry out charity activities such as bookcrossing, material donations, Global Volunteer Day, and more.

Governance Organizational and Mechanism:

Leveraging our stable and efficient management structure, DHL places compliance at the core of its operations. By providing compliance training, employing cutting-edge data security technology, and adhering to an industry-leading Code of Conduct, and collaborating with like-minded and compliant suppliers and partners, DHL Group maintains the highest standards of governance. In 2023, DHL has introduced stricter requirements on compliance, data governance, cybersecurity, and information protection. Currently, 98 percent of middle and upper management executive employees received compliance training certificates.

 

DHL has formulated detailed compliance strategies encompassing various domains, including anti-corruption, conflicts of interest, competitive compliance, respect for human rights, and import/export controls. Additionally, DHL has established 24/7 whistleblowing hotlines across global locations and branches, enabling our employees to access robust compliance support and reporting.


Innovation Sustainability: 

In October 2022, DHL Express Chinese brand FMACM joined forces to launch the exclusive "One Planet" fashion collection. The “One Planet” collection follows the concept of sustainable fashion and innovatively offers an eco-friendly supply chain from design and production to purchasing and shipping.
