Product / Service Introduction

Water pump is high energy consumption product. It accounts for around 10 percent of the world’s electricity consumption. According to a report of Tsinghua University, water pump accounts for 10-15% energy consumption of building. But the energy saving of pumps are neglected as they are of low price and are usually in equipment room.

To help customers lower carbon emission and fulfill the vision of circular economy, Wilo began to explore energy renovation business opportunities from  2012. With the focus on high energy consumption sectors, such as public building, district heating, factory and data centers etc. Wilo help the customer measure the energy consumption level, provide total solutions, promoting green energy saving technology application and facilitating the low carbon development.

With the improving awareness of sustainability development and the implementation of the policies for Dual Carbon Strategy, Wilo energy renovation business kept growing in recent years. The projects and customers include The Ministry of Health, Nanjing Sheraton, Jinzhong District Heating System, Pudong Airport and Suzhou Industrial Park etc.

Explanation of Circular Economy Practice

Worldwide, up to 246 terawatt-hours in electricity for heating, cooling and air conditioning application could be saved if outdated pumps were replaced by the efficient models- that is equivalent to the capacity of around 80 medium-sized coal-fired power plants that would no longer be required.

Wilo high efficiency pumps could save up to 80% electricity consumption compared with uncontrolled low efficiency water pumps. Moreover, with a comprehensive solution for the water supply system, extra energy could be saved. One of Wilo’s sustainability goals is to provide more than 10,000 energy solutions and save 1,8 TWh  through high-efficiency pumps annually.

Doing energy saving with water pumps is very cost effective. According to Wilo Group’s research, to saving one kilogram CO2 emission for buildings, it would cost 8 € to change the window, 6 € to install insulating wall, but only 1 € to change water pumps!

With the dedicated instruments, Wilo team could measure, analyze the water system and provide solutions composed of different pump portfolios for customer selection, customer could make choice after evaluating the cost and energy saving. Apart from the energy saving of the pumps changing, Wilo energy renovation team provide pumps remanufacture, used pumps utilization service, which not only save a lot of money for customers, but also reduce the carbon emission of pump changing itself.

We hereby take the district heating renovation project for Yijinhuoluoqi in the Inner Mongolia as an example to explain how Wilo energy renovation service benefit both the local community and the customers themselves while reducing the carbon footprint.

More Product / Service Highlights (Optional)

Yijinhuoluoqi is a typical county of Inner Mongolia with 250,000 permanent residents located in the North China. From 2009, Wilo started the cooperation with the customer on the construction of local heating centers and the later energy renovation projects after 2020.

In past the 14 years, Wilo sold 1,075 units high efficiency water pumps to the customer, building a sustainable relationship with the customers.

In the renovation project of 2022, Wilo actively involved into the on-site investigation, door-knocking survey and life cycle energy efficiency calculation etc., trying to provide total solution to the customer. Wilo innovatively adopted two sustainable methods, remanufacturing 22 pumps and swapping 19 existing pumps of different powers, in the renovation project, helping the customer save more than 1million RMB and avoid raw material waste in a sustainable way.

As the renovation result for the 30 heating centers in 2022 shows, Wilo helped the customer save 34% electricity consumption of 2,239,725kwh just in one heating season. Given this heating season is 13 days longer than the last one due to colder weather, and the heating area increased about 200,000sqm, the actual energy saving result should be better than the data shows.

This energy savings could be sustainable as long as Wilo pumps’ 30 years life cycle. The total electricity saving of the pumps life cycle would be 67million kwh.
